Design in Monterrey, Mx.

In the last year, I’ve been asked at least 30 times “where are you from?” followed by “where is Monterrey? I’ve never heard about that city before”

Monterrey is my hometown, and even when I could make a list of things I don’t like, it is an amazing growing design hub. These are my favorite recent (and not so recent) design discoveries.

DESIGNERS

Anagrama, Raidho and Savvy are really cool design studios, and there’s a world of local talented designers besides them.

Open Studio by K [http://www.openstudiobyk.com/]

I love her style, very clean but not too serious that it makes you uncomfortable, plus she had me at pink and gold.

Yerthekid [http://instagram.com/yerthekid]

He says he’s not a designer, he’s an obsessive compulsive desaster, how cool is that? Yer is a super talented designer and the best letterer in town.

Students like Noé Araujo and Marcela Garza Garza have impressed me with their neat style too.

ILLUSTRATORS

I’ve always looked up to illustrators because it’s a skill I’m always trying to improve. 50’s and 60’s illustrations are the best to me. These are my favorite from Monterrey.

Quique Foyo [http://www.quiquefoyo.com/]

Quique is from Veracruz but based in Monterrey at the moment. He’s still in school but has developed an amazing style. I love it, I love it, I love it.

Violeta Hernández [http://soyvioleta.com]

Violeta’s work is like a beautiful thing I don’t want to touch.

Melissa Chaib [http://melissachaib.com]

I started following Melissa’s work around 2011, I fell for it because I totally get her references. Her work is a cleaned up 90’s style. She’s one of those girls you wish you’d hangout with.

Fanngora [http://instagram.com/fanngora]

Fanngora’s work is all about the details, and who doesn’t love small details? She makes all kinds of things from calendars to puppets. Yep, puppets.

Other illustrators I also like are Isabel de Lara, Laiza Onofre, and Andrea González Belt. The three of them have beautiful experimental styles and are part of the cool local crafters community.

PLACES & STUFF

We are lucky that there’s so many cool design places in Monterrey and the sorrounded area. I think my new favorite spot is Café Limón.

La Tipográfica [http://instagram.com/LaTipografica]

La Tipográfica is, to me, the best letterpress place in Monterrey. I’m always following their work, and they make really amazing things. I would love to try their services when I’m back in town.

How beautiful is this foil? The design is by Blanco Illustration

El Cowork [http://www.elcowork.com/]

This is my most recent discovery from Monterrey. El Cowork is the coolest coworking space in town. They also host events and workshops.

Folio [http://foliodigital.net/]

From the family of La Tempestad, Vocero, and Residente, Folio is one of the most important design magazines in México. Very inspiring design and content.

Folio was designed by Face.

I’m sure there’s a lot of talented people, cool places and projects that I don’t know yet, and it is super inspiring for me to discover new things from Monterrey. I’ve never felt hometown pride before and it feels really good.

Thanks for reading!
